Peter Houben is Assistant professor of Environmental Earth Sciences and Sustainability. His main interests are within the environmental impact of human activities and their interaction with soil and river systems. Houben's interests  touch on topics of soil and water resources management (soil erosion, soil conservation), landscape planning, ecosystem services, the Anthropocene, civil engineering, channel-floodplain change, and landform evolution. Like his research, his teaching draws on own field-oriented data recording, information from geology, archaeology, land use change and remote sensing and use GIS applications where applicable.

Before coming to LUC Houben taught at the Goethe University in Frankfurt, University of Bonn, University of Cologne and worked as a planning consultant with a major energy utility. His teaching record ranges from undergraduate classes to the supervision of Master level and doctoral students. At LUC, he teaches classes of the LUC Earth, Energy and Sustainability program.
