Join the Leiden Minor Participation in Heritage

Who actually determines what we consider heritage? And above all: who is allowed to have a say, make decisions, and participate in it?

Throughout Europe – and officially in the Netherlands since January 2024 – the call is clear: involve citizens actively in heritage. The Convention on the Value of Cultural Heritage for Society, in short Faro Convention, (2005) places the relationship between citizens and heritage at the center of heritage management. In practice, there is already plenty of experimentation with this, but one question keeps recurring: how do you give participation truly effective form? This is exactly what this new minor delves into.

For whom? This minor is ideal for third-year HBO and WO students interested in heritage, participation, policy, society, and practice-oriented work – and who want to translate theory into impact outside the lecture hall.

In this completely newly developed minor, you will learn not only to think about participation, but above all: to do it yourself. In addition to a solid foundation in theory and methods, you will work together with students from various disciplines on a concrete heritage project for a real client (think of heritage institutions, government bodies, or civil society organizations) and/or a heritage community from the field. Together, you design a suitable form of participation around a heritage theme, and you implement it. You will be working with a newly developed book Handbook on Participation and Heritage (fortcoming).
