On 15-16 June 2017, the Digital Archaeology Research Group and the Centre for Global Heritage and Development at the Faculty of Archaeology, Leiden University will jointly host the 2017 annual meeting of the Centre for Digital Heritage (CDH).
The theme of the CDH 2017 meeting will be Heritage under Threat.
Armed conflicts are currently threatening heritage at scales that seemed inconceivable only a few years ago. Tangible heritage such as landscapes, sites, monuments and artefacts and intangible heritage such as knowledge, languages and traditions are likewise affected. Apart from such obvious threats in conflict zones, heritage elsewhere is often threatened by neglect, decay, or a lack of stakeholder involvement, education, or technical and financial means.
Digital technologies provide manifold means for heritage recording, monitoring, analysis and visualisation, as well as for dissemination, education and community involvement. The 2017 annual meeting of the Centre for Digital Heritage will explore these means and their applications to heritage under threat, taking into account that digital data and tools themselves may become part of our (endangered) heritage.
The preliminary programme comprises the following oral sessions:
- 14 June 2017: Welcome reception
- 15 June 2017: Heritage in Conflict Areas
- Session 1: 3D Recording and Modelling of Heritage
- This session invites contributions on the digital 3D recording, modelling and reconstruction of artefacts, monuments, sites and landscapes, with a special focus on endangered and lost heritage.
- Session 2: Monitoring Heritage Sites and Monuments
- This session invites contributions on the monitoring of heritage sites and landscapes, e.g. through remote sensing and other means, especially in conflict areas.
- Session 1: 3D Recording and Modelling of Heritage
- 16 June 2017: (Digital) Preservation of (Digital) Heritage
- Session 3: Making Heritage Data FAIR
- This session invites contributions on digital archives and data management in the heritage field, with a special focus on the application of the FAIR principles (findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable).
- Session 4: Heritage as Games – Games as Heritage
- This session invites contributions on virtual worlds and games related to heritage, taking into account that games can be considered part of our (endangered) digital heritage as well.
- Session 3: Making Heritage Data FAIR
Furthermore there will be a poster session on the general theme of the conference, Heritage under Threat (session 5).
As part of the conference, Dr. Sada Mire (Leiden Unversity) will give a keynote lecture on her new MOOC Heritage under Threat. A welcome reception on the 14th of June and a social dinner the 15th of June will complete the programme.
